EMILY CUTHIN, a Teacher Cadet from Southern Guilford High School, will be attending Western Carolina University this fall where she plans to pursue a teaching career in middle grades math and social studies. The daughter of Dan and Anne Cutchin, Emily is the Drum Major of Southern Guilford’s marching band, President of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and a member of the National Honor Society. She is also an active member in her church youth group. Emily says, “Teacher Cadet has allowed me to explore the world of education in a hands-on way and has helped me grow as a person. Through this program, I have learned that good teaching must come from the heart, and my passion for helping others has evolved into a desire to explain things to my future students in a meaningful way and help them solve problems they face outside the classroom.

WILLIAM YATES is a Teacher Cadet from Murphy High School in Cherokee County. He will attend Queens University of Charlotte to pursue a degree in Special Education or high school English. The son of George and Nancy Yates, William’s activities include cross country and track, learning various styles of ballroom dancing, cooking, and reading. He is also a member of his church’s youth group, choir, and handbell orchestra. William says of Teacher Cadet, “Participating in the Teacher Cadet Program did much more than teach me how to approach the teaching profession: it taught me the priceless value of laughter, the importance of camaraderie and encouragement, and the fulfillment that sharing your passion for learning with eager students can give you at the end of a long day. I wouldn’t change the experience I have had with the program for anything!”
